Why a student loan application may need Turkish documents

Student Finance England, administered by the Student Loans Company, funds tuition fees and maintenance for students who meet the residence rules: British citizens and people with settled status who have lived in the UK for three years, people with long residence, refugees and those with humanitarian protection, and family members of people with settled or pre-settled status. The regulations have also carried a category for the children of Turkish workers under the EU–Turkey Association Agreement, whose scope has narrowed since the end of the Brexit transition period; check the current rules with SFE. Each category is proved with documents, and for a Turkish family two kinds of evidence tend to be in Turkish: proof of a relationship (a parent’s or spouse’s status is what qualifies the student) and proof of household income where a parent lives or earns in Türkiye. Previous study at a Turkish university can also affect entitlement, which brings a Turkish transcript into the file.

What the SLC expects of translations

Student Finance England’s evidence guidance asks for documents not in English to be accompanied by an English translation; we have not recorded its exact wording, so the box on this page summarises it and links to GOV.UK. In practice the SLC looks for the same certification content as other UK bodies: a statement that the translation is a true and accurate translation of the original document, the date, and the translator’s or company’s name and contact details. Our certification carries these and the company’s Ankara registry details on every page. Where SFE asks for identity evidence by post, it wants original documents, and the translation should travel with them.

Turkish documents on a student finance file

• Birth certificate or a full nüfus kayıt örneği proving that the settled person is your parent.
• Marriage certificate where you qualify as the spouse of a settled person, or where your parents’ marriage is relevant to the household assessment.
• Divorce decree where only one parent’s income should be assessed.
• Parents’ income in Türkiye: tax return and vergi levhası, payslips, an SGK service record, a pension statement or an employer’s letter.
• A Turkish university transcript where you studied in Türkiye before, to establish the dates and length of that study.

Where student finance files stall

• Household income evidence for the Turkish calendar year submitted without explanation when SFE assesses by UK tax year; we add a note giving the period covered.
• Lira figures with no currency indicated, so the assessor cannot convert them.
• A short nüfus extract that shows the student but not the parent, leaving the relationship unproved.
• Only the first page of a multi-year transcript translated, so the previous-study check cannot be completed.
• Names spelt differently on the student’s passport and the parent’s Turkish documents.

How we prepare SFE documents

Send scans of the certificates, every page of the income documents for the year SFE has asked about, and the transcript if previous study is involved. We translate in full, mark currency and period on income documents, keep names consistent across the family’s papers, and certify every page with the accuracy statement, date, signature, company name, registry number and contact details. You receive a certified PDF for upload to your student finance account within 1–2 working days, and a wet-signed hard copy by courier if SFE asks for documents by post. A birth certificate and a marriage certificate are £20 together; a Turkish tax return 2–4 pages, £20–40; a transcript £30–60. No UK VAT is charged.
