Turkish Consulate General in London

Where the London consulate is, who it serves, how appointments work, which UK documents it reads without a translation and when it insists on a translator from its own register. We are not on that register; we provide the Turkish-notary route for documents going into Türkiye.

What the receiving body requires

“İngiliz makamlarından alınan herhangi bir resmi evrak (Pasaport, Doğum Belgesi, Evlilik Belgesi) için dışarıdan yeminli tercüme talep edilmemektedir.”

Address, area served and opening times

The Consulate General of the Republic of Türkiye in London (Londra Başkonsolosluğu) is at Rutland Lodge, Rutland Gardens, Knightsbridge, London SW7 1BW, a short walk from Knightsbridge underground station. It is the busiest of the three Turkish consulates general in the UK and serves Turkish citizens living in London, the south and most of England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland are covered by the consulate general in Edinburgh, and the north of England by the consulate general in Manchester. Wales has an honorary consulate in Cardiff, which cannot carry out civil registration or notarial acts; residents of Wales use London for those.

Opening hours change around Turkish and UK public holidays — check the current hours on the consulate’s own website before travelling. Almost every service, from passport renewal to a power of attorney, is by appointment booked online through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs appointment system at konsolosluk.gov.tr, where you log in with your T.C. kimlik number. Walk-in service is limited to emergencies and to collecting documents that are ready.

What the consulate does

  • Passports and identity cards. Biometric passport applications and the new-type T.C. kimlik kartı, including the first card for a child.
  • Civil registration (nüfus). Recording a UK birth, marriage or death in the Turkish family register, Article 27/A divorce registration, name-change follow-up and issuing a nüfus kayıt örneği.
  • Notary unit. Powers of attorney (vekaletname), consents (muvafakatname), revocations (azilname), declarations and signature circulars, one act per appointment. Details are on consulate notary services.
  • Military service. Deferment (tecil) for students and workers and applications to pay the fee in foreign currency (dövizle askerlik).
  • Citizenship. Applications by marriage, re-acquisition, renunciation with permission and the Mavi Kart.
  • e-Devlet passwords issued in person on production of your identity card.

Which documents the consulate translates itself

For registration matters the consulate does not send you to a translator. Its birth-registration note states that no outside sworn translation is requested for any document obtained from British authorities, and it names the passport, birth certificate and marriage certificate as examples. A consular officer reads the English document and enters the Turkish record directly. Ordering a translation of a UK birth or marriage certificate for a consulate registration is money wasted.

Some documents are different. Where the consulate does want a Turkish text, for example a GRO certificate of no impediment for a marriage in Türkiye, a DBS certificate in a citizenship-by-marriage file, or a UK pension letter for a duty-free vehicle import, the translation must come from a translator on the consulate's own register (searchable at konsolosluk.gov.tr) and is then certified at the notary unit as a translation attestation (tercüme tasdiki). The stamp confirms the translator's signature, not the accuracy of the text. We are not on that register and do not sell translations for that purpose.

When to bring an interpreter

The notary unit works in Turkish. A party who does not speak Turkish, such as a British spouse giving consent or a British father signing a paternity deed (babalık tanıma senedi), must attend with a sworn Turkish interpreter, and the officer will not proceed without one. See interpreting at consulate appointments.

Where we come in

Our work starts where the consulate's ends: documents that go to an office inside Türkiye with no consular officer to read English. A British passport for a tapu transfer, an apostilled UK power of attorney for a lawyer in Ankara, a UK degree for YÖK, a death certificate for an inheritance file. Those are translated by a translator sworn before an Ankara notary and notarised there, which is the form Turkish domestic bodies expect. The apostille always comes first: FCDO on the UK document, then our translation of document and apostille together, then, if asked, an apostille of the translation in Ankara for £15. Read notarised translation in Türkiye.

Prices are from £6.50 per page of 1,000 characters into Turkish, plus the Turkish notary tariff at cost (about £13.50 per page in 2026) and £5 handling. A PDF scan comes by e-mail; the wet-sealed original travels by courier for £30. No UK VAT is charged, and there is no collection point in London.

What you receive

  • A clear answer on whether your document needs a translation at all before you book
  • Notarised Turkish translation from Ankara for documents going to Turkish domestic offices
  • Apostille of the translation in Ankara where the receiving office asks (£15)
  • PDF by e-mail; wet-sealed original by courier to the UK or to Türkiye

Frequently asked questions

Can I just turn up at Rutland Lodge?

For most services no. Book through konsolosluk.gov.tr and bring the appointment confirmation. The counters do handle genuine emergencies, such as a lost passport before travel, without an appointment.

Do I need to translate my child's UK birth certificate for registration?

No. The consulate reads the full birth certificate itself. Bring the full certificate, not the short one, and both parents' identity documents; see registering a UK birth at the consulate.

The consulate told me to use a translator from its list. Can you do it instead?

Not for that purpose. The consulate certifies only translations by people on its register, and we are not on it. If the same document will also be used inside Türkiye, our translation notarised in Ankara serves that second use.

My British husband has to sign a consent form at the notary unit. What does he need?

His passport, the appointment and a sworn Turkish interpreter, because the officer explains the act in Turkish and records that it was interpreted. Without an interpreter the appointment is refused.

I live in Cardiff. Which consulate do I use?

The honorary consulate in Cardiff can help with information and some passport-related matters but not with registration or notarial acts. For those, book at London.
