What a Turkish university diploma contains

Turkish universities issue the diploma through the rectorate on completion of a programme, signed by the rector and the dean or institute director and bearing the university's embossed seal. It states the graduate's name and, on older diplomas, parents' names and place of birth, the faculty or institute, the department or programme, the degree level, the graduation date and the diploma number. Many diplomas also confer a professional title (unvan) such as engineer (mühendis), physician (tıp doktoru), pharmacist (eczacı) or teacher (öğretmen), and some bachelor's diplomas state the honours standing. The four levels are:

  • Ön lisans: two-year associate degree, usually from a vocational school of higher education (meslek yüksekokulu);
  • Lisans: four-year bachelor's degree, five in dentistry and pharmacy, six in medicine;
  • Yüksek lisans: master's degree, with or without a thesis;
  • Doktora: doctorate, and the equivalent in medical specialities (tıpta uzmanlık).

Since the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) linked its records to e-Devlet, graduates can download a graduate record (mezun belgesi) with a barcode that states the same facts. UK bodies accept it with a translation for many purposes, although ENIC and the regulators expect the diploma itself. We translate the diploma text, the title, the seal and signatures, the diploma number and any endorsement on the back, and we translate the e-Devlet record with its verification note when you send that too.

When a UK body asks for it

  • UK ENIC, for a Statement of Comparability that employers and regulators use. Turkish is not in ENIC's translation waiver, so a certified translation is always needed. See translations for UK ENIC.
  • Postgraduate admissions, where a master's or PhD application in the UK is based on a Turkish lisans or yüksek lisans.
  • The GMC, NMC, GDC and GPhC, for which the diploma is the primary qualification. The GMC's rule is quoted below.
  • Employers and HR, for professional roles and Skilled Worker sponsorship where the sponsor wants proof of degree level.
  • Home Office applications that list a qualification, such as a Student visa where the degree secured the place.

What the translation must contain

The GMC asks for a copy of each document in the original language and a complete English translation made by an official translator, with the translator's or translation service's contact details, stamped and signed, translated directly from the original language. Our certified translation carries a stamp, a signature, the date and the company's full contact details and registry number, and it is made directly from the Turkish. The NMC asks for certified English translations from a certified translator, and ENIC, universities and employers apply the gov.uk wording; the same certificate covers all of them.

Degree titles are translated by level, never literally: yüksek lisans becomes master's degree, not “high licence”, and ön lisans becomes associate degree. The professional title conferred is kept, since it is what a regulator looks for on a medical or engineering diploma. Departments are given their English name with the Turkish in brackets so that the translation matches the university's own English website, which the reader may check. Read getting your Turkish degree recognised in the UK.

Apostille

ENIC, the GMC, the NMC and UK universities do not ask for an apostille on a Turkish diploma; they verify with the university or through YÖK. An apostille can be obtained at the valilik after the university confirms the signatures if a body outside the UK asks for it, and the e-Devlet graduate record is verified by its code rather than legalised.

Price and turnaround

A diploma is one page of under 1,000 characters, so the certified translation costs £10.00, certification included, no UK VAT. Most graduates send the transcript with it; see transcript translation for its own page count. Delivery is within 1 working day as a certified PDF, same-day with the fast option before 11:00 UK time. Regulators that want a paper copy receive a signed hard copy by courier from Ankara for £30. We have no UK office and do not offer collection.

What you receive

  • Translation of the diploma with degree level, professional title, department and seal rendered consistently with the university's English usage
  • Stamped and signed certification page with date, contact details and company registry number, meeting GMC, NMC, ENIC and gov.uk expectations
  • Copy of the diploma attached
  • Certified PDF by e-mail; courier hard copy optional

Frequently asked questions

Is the e-Devlet mezun belgesi enough, or do I need the diploma?

For employers and many universities the e-Devlet record with our translation has been accepted. UK ENIC and the health regulators expect the diploma itself, so send the diploma for those and the record as a supplement.

How do you translate yüksek lisans and ön lisans?

Yüksek lisans is a master's degree and ön lisans an associate degree. We keep the Turkish term in brackets at first use so that the reader can match the translation to the original.

My diploma is already bilingual. Do I still need you?

Some universities print an English version on the same page. If the English text is complete and the seals and signatures are legible, a UK body may accept it as issued. Where the English is partial or the stamps are Turkish only, we certify a translation of the Turkish parts.

Does the GMC accept a translation certified in Türkiye?

The GMC's requirement is about what the translation contains: contact details, a stamp and a signature, and a direct translation from the original language. Our certification provides those, and the GMC has accepted translations we certified to date.

Do you translate the professional title on a medical diploma?

Yes. A tıp fakültesi diploma confers the title tıp doktoru, which we render as medical doctor with the Turkish in brackets, because the regulator is checking that the primary medical qualification confers that title.
