Where Turkish documents appear in form AN

Naturalisation under the British Nationality Act 1981 requires five years’ residence (three if married to a British citizen), settled status, English, the Life in the UK test and good character. Most of the evidence is British, and Guide AN, the Home Office’s guidance for applicants, is where the document list lives. Turkish documents still come in at several points: your passport, past and present, is examined for identity and for travel outside the UK; your birth certificate or civil registry record may be requested to confirm identity and parentage; your marriage certificate if you apply on the basis of marriage to a British citizen; and a name-change decision if the name on your passport differs from that on other documents. Occasionally a caseworker asks for an overseas criminal record certificate when checking good character.

What the guidance says about translations

The Home Office nationality caseworker guidance states that customers must supply translations of any foreign documents that are not in English; the sentence is quoted in the box. The guidance does not define what kind of translation it means or keep a list of translators, and in practice the standard applied is the GOV.UK certification wording: a written confirmation that the translation is a true and accurate translation of the original document, dated, with the translator’s or company’s name and contact details. Turkish documents on a naturalisation file

• Turkish passport: the biodata page and, where absences need evidencing, the stamped pages.
• Birth certificate (doğum belgesi) or a nüfus kayıt örneği where identity or parentage is queried.
• Marriage certificate for the three-year spouse route, unless the marriage took place in the UK.
• Name-change court decision where names differ across documents.
• Adli sicil kaydı only if the Home Office asks for it during the good-character check.

Where citizenship applications trip on translation

• Names rendered with and without Turkish characters in different places, so the certificate of naturalisation would be issued in a spelling that does not match the passport.
• Passport stamps listed without dates or with entry and exit confused, undermining the absences declaration.
• A marriage certificate from years ago translated by a relative and rejected as not independently verifiable.
• An e-Devlet birth record uploaded without its verification code.
• A translation supplied for one document but the caseworker’s request covered two.
