Checklist: Turkish citizenship by marriage

For a British spouse applying for Turkish citizenship after three years of marriage: which UK documents need an apostille, which need a Turkish translation, and how the two steps must be ordered.

Last reviewed 3 September 2026

A British spouse applying for Turkish citizenship assembles a file almost entirely from UK sources, which means almost all of it needs legalising and translating. The sequence matters more than the list: an apostille obtained after translation is attached to the wrong piece of paper and the work is done twice.

Who this list is for

British or other non-Turkish spouses who have been married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years and whose union subsists, applying through the Consulate General in the UK or at a nüfus müdürlüğü in Türkiye. It assumes the marriage is already recorded in the Turkish register; if it is not, that comes first.

The documents

  • The applicant's Full Birth Certificate — long form showing both parents. FCDO apostille first, then translation into Turkish. Note that GRO certificates are not eligible for the FCDO's electronic apostille, so this is the paper service.
  • Criminal record disclosure — DBS or ACRO police certificate — apostilled, then translated into Turkish. These are also outside the FCDO e-apostille service, so allow for the paper route and its longer wait.
  • Evidence of the applicant's own nationality — a British passport, or a certificate of naturalisation where citizenship was acquired. Apostille and translation where the certificate rather than the passport is relied on.
  • Marriage evidence — the Turkish family record (aile cüzdanı) if the marriage is already registered, otherwise the UK certificate route described in our marriage registration checklist.
  • Proof of living together as a family — a joint tenancy agreement, council tax bills and utility bills in both names. Translated into Turkish; a representative sample across the period is normally enough, so agree the selection before paying for a stack of statements.
  • Two Turkish referees — witnesses who can attest to the marriage, attending in person. Nothing to translate.
  • Health and declaration forms — completed on the Turkish forms at the appointment.

What people most often get wrong

Translating first and apostilling afterwards is the classic error and it is expensive, because the FCDO stamp then verifies a document nobody in Türkiye asked to see. Close behind is certification route: a translation you hand to the Consulate in the UK must come from a translator on its own registered list, certified at the consular notary unit, whereas a file submitted inside Türkiye takes a Turkish notarised translation. We provide the second, not the first, and would rather say so before you pay. A third error is treating a DBS basic disclosure printed at home as equivalent to the certificate that can be apostilled.

What we would translate and what it would cost

A typical file: birth certificate (1 page), ACRO certificate (1 page), certificate of naturalisation (1 page), a tenancy agreement extract (4 pages) and two council tax bills (2 pages). Nine pages of English into Turkish at £6.50 is £58.50. Where the nüfus müdürlüğü or NVİGM wants notarised translations, Ankara notarisation adds the notary's tariff of about £13.50 per page plus a £5 handling fee — for nine pages roughly £126 — and a Turkish apostille on the notarised set, if requested, is £15. FCDO apostilles on the UK originals are paid to the FCDO, not to us.

Before you rely on this list

We prepare translations; we do not assess citizenship applications, and the decision rests with the Turkish authorities under nationality law. Their current requirements override anything on this page, so confirm the list with the post handling your file — the London post's consular pages are at londra-bk.mfa.gov.tr.

Frequently asked questions

Does Turkish citizenship by marriage come automatically after three years?

No. Three years of subsisting marriage is the gateway to applying, not an entitlement, and the file is assessed on cohabitation and good character grounds. Processing commonly runs from several months to a couple of years.

Why can't the DBS certificate be e-apostilled?

The FCDO's electronic apostille excludes several document families, DBS and ACRO certificates among them, so those go through the paper service. Build the extra time into your plan. Details on the FCDO legalisation page.

We live in London. Is it easier to apply in Türkiye?

Many couples do, on a summer visit. The advantage is that a Turkish notarised translation is accepted directly and appointments are easier to get; the disadvantage is that every UK document must be apostilled before you travel, because it cannot be done from Türkiye.

Do the utility bills all need translating?

Rarely. Agree a representative selection with the office handling the file — often one bill per year — rather than translating twenty-four months of paper at £6.50 a page.
