Checklist: consulate marriage registration

Recording a UK marriage in the Turkish civil register: the certificate to bring, what a British or third-country spouse must supply, and where a previous divorce changes the process.

Last reviewed 3 September 2026

A marriage celebrated at an English register office has no effect in the Turkish records until it is reported. Until it is, your nüfus entry still shows you as single, which blocks everything downstream — a child's registration, a joint tapu transaction, an inheritance file.

Who this list is for

Turkish citizens who married in the UK, whether to a British, Turkish or third-country spouse, and who now need the marriage entered in the Turkish civil register through their Consulate General. Couples still planning the wedding should read marrying in England as a Turkish citizen first, because one document on this list is issued before the ceremony rather than after it.

The documents

  • UK marriage certificate — a certified copy from the register office or the GRO, not the commemorative version handed to you on the day. As with birth certificates, the Consulate does not ask for an outside sworn translation of British civil-status documents.
  • The Turkish spouse's identity documents — TC kimlik kartı and passport, plus the aile cüzdanı if one already exists.
  • A British spouse's Full Birth Certificate and passport — the long form naming both parents, because the Turkish record enters the spouse's parents as well.
  • A third-country spouse's birth certificate — either a multilingual Formül A extract, or the national certificate apostilled, translated into Turkish and certified through that country's mission in London. This is the item most likely to need translation work.
  • Previous divorce, if either spouse was married before — for a UK divorce, the decree absolute or final order, apostilled by the FCDO and translated into Turkish; the divorce must be recorded in Türkiye under the article 27/A procedure or through a recognition case before the new marriage can be registered.
  • Payment — the Consulate's published fee, historically a £10 postal order for this transaction; confirm the current method before you post anything.
  • Evlenme ehliyet belgesi (certificate of no impediment) — issued by the Consulate for a marriage in England. It is not something you bring to the registration; it belongs to the stage before the wedding.

What people most often get wrong

Couples arrive with the decorative certificate from the ceremony rather than a certified copy from the registrar. Turkish spouses assume their earlier UK divorce is already known to the Turkish authorities because the Home Office knew about it; it is not, and the marriage registration will halt until the divorce is recorded. And a surprising number of people pay to have the British marriage certificate translated into Turkish before asking whether the Consulate wanted one.

What we would translate and what it would cost

For a Turkish–British couple with no previous marriages, usually nothing at all. For a Turkish–British couple where one spouse divorced in England: a final order of two pages at £6.50 per page is £13.00, and the recognition file in Türkiye normally wants that translation notarised — the notary's tariff of roughly £13.50 per page plus a £5 handling fee, so about £45 all in. For a third-country spouse's birth certificate, one page is £6.50 plus the same notarisation if a Turkish office asks for it. An apostille on the UK original comes from the FCDO and is not our charge.

Before you rely on this list

Not legal advice, simply a practical aid: consular practice varies between posts and can be updated without notice, so the requirements published by your own Consulate General come first. The London post lists them at londra-bk.mfa.gov.tr.

Frequently asked questions

How long do we have to register the marriage?

There is no cliff edge in the way there is with births, but every month of delay is a month in which your Turkish record is wrong. People usually discover the problem at the worst moment — buying property, registering a baby, or dealing with an inheritance.

My husband is Pakistani. Why is his birth certificate the hard part?

Because it is neither British nor Turkish, so neither the Consulate's in-house handling nor a simple certified translation is enough on its own. It needs legalisation in its country of origin and certification through that country's London mission, with a Turkish translation. Allow several weeks.

Do you translate the decree absolute for the 27/A procedure?

Yes. Apostille the final order at the FCDO first, then we translate the order and the apostille into Turkish and, where the nüfus office wants it, have the translation notarised in Ankara. The route is set out in divorce registration under article 27/A.

Can we register the marriage from Türkiye instead?

You can present the apostilled UK certificate with a notarised Turkish translation to a nüfus müdürlüğü in Türkiye. Families who spend summers there often find that quicker than an appointment in London.
