When an adult becomes a British citizen by naturalisation, or a child by registration, UK Visas and Immigration issues a certificate of naturalisation (vatandaşlığa alınma belgesi) or certificate of registration, normally handed over at the citizenship ceremony. It gives the holder's full name, date and place of birth, the section of the British Nationality Act 1981 under which citizenship was granted, the date, the certificate number and the Home Office seal. It is issued once; GOV.UK notes that it costs £456 to replace a lost or damaged certificate, which is why we work from a certified copy rather than asking you to post the original anywhere.
Uses in Türkiye
- Citizenship by marriage. A British spouse applying for Turkish citizenship after three years of marriage proves their own nationality with the passport and, where the passport was issued after naturalisation, with this certificate, because the nüfus authorities check the date and basis on which British citizenship was acquired. See Turkish citizenship for a British spouse.
- Dual-citizenship notification (çok vatandaşlık). A Turkish citizen who naturalises in the UK is expected to have the second nationality recorded in the family register. The consulate takes the declaration; a nüfus müdürlüğü in Türkiye takes it with a translated certificate.
- Renouncing Turkish citizenship with permission (izinle çıkma). The application needs evidence that the other nationality has been acquired or promised; the naturalisation certificate is that evidence. Read renouncing Turkish citizenship.
- Mavi Kart. A former citizen applying for the Blue Card shows the foreign nationality acquired after renunciation.
- Inheritance and property. Courts and tapu offices establishing the nationality of an heir or buyer at a particular date.
Original or certified copy?
The certificate is signed on behalf of the Home Secretary, so the FCDO can apostille the original. Given the replacement cost and the postal risk, most clients instead have a UK notary or solicitor certify a copy and send that copy for the apostille. Both routes are eligible for the e-Apostille (£35, usually within two working days) as well as the paper service (£45). We can arrange the apostille through a UK partner for the FCDO fee plus £20 handling, and we translate whatever the apostille is attached to, including the solicitor's certification wording.
Translation and notarisation in Ankara
The translation reproduces every element of the certificate: the statutory reference, the name exactly as printed, the certificate number and the seal description. A translator sworn before an Ankara notary signs it, and the notary binds it to a copy of the apostilled certificate. For nüfus offices, courts and the citizenship directorate that notarial form is the standard one. For an application lodged at the consulate, the consulate asks for a translator from its own register, so check with the consular officer whether a translation is needed at all before ordering; for many consular declarations the officer reads the English certificate directly.
If a court or the citizenship directorate wants the translation legalised, we apostille the notarial certificate at the Ankara kaymakamlık for £15.
Cost and delivery
The certificate with apostille and certification is one page of 1,000 characters: £6.50 for the translation, plus the notary tariff at about £13.50 per page and £5 handling. No UK VAT is charged. Translation takes 1 to 2 working days and notarisation a further day. You receive a scan by e-mail and the wet-sealed original by courier for £30, sent to you or to the relative or lawyer filing the application in Türkiye. Collection is not available.

Frequently asked questions
My name on the certificate differs slightly from my Turkish record. What happens?
We translate the name exactly as printed and add a translator's note giving the Turkish spelling so the registrar can match the two. If the difference comes from a deed poll, that deed should be apostilled and translated as well.
Is the ceremony programme or the congratulation letter needed?
No. Only the certificate has legal effect. Turkish offices have not asked for the accompanying letter to date.
Does the consulate need a translation for the dual-citizenship declaration?
Often not; the consular officer reads the English certificate. Where a translation is required, the consulate asks for one from its registered list. Our notarised translation is for the nüfus müdürlüğü and the courts in Türkiye.
Can you translate a certificate issued decades ago under the old Act?
Yes. Certificates issued under the British Nationality Act 1948 and earlier follow a different layout and sometimes carry handwritten entries; we translate every field and describe the seal and any endorsements.
How long is the translation valid?
The notarised translation does not expire. Receiving offices in Türkiye sometimes want the apostille to be recent, so if a year or more passes before you use it, ask the office whether a fresh apostille is needed.
