MEB — meaning and English translation

MEB (Millî Eğitim Bakanlığı) is Türkiye's Ministry of National Education, responsible for schools, school-leaving certificates and the recognition of foreign school qualifications.

Turkish term: MEB · Last reviewed 31 August 2026

The Millî Eğitim Bakanlığı runs primary and secondary education in Türkiye, sets the curriculum, issues the lise diploması and school report cards through its e-Okul system and, through provincial directorates and its education counsellors abroad, decides whether foreign school qualifications count as equivalent to Turkish ones. It also issues vocational and master craftsman certificates under the Vocational Education Law. In London the Education Counsellor's office (Eğitim Müşavirliği) handles equivalence applications for GCSEs and A-levels.

We render it as “Ministry of National Education (MEB)” and its provincial arm as “Provincial Directorate of National Education (İl Millî Eğitim Müdürlüğü)”. The English name is the ministry's own; we do not shorten it to “Ministry of Education”.

UK schools and universities meet MEB on diplomas, transcripts and transfer documents from Turkish schools, and parents returning to Türkiye meet it the other way. See MEB lise denklik.
