Denklik — meaning and English translation
Denklik means equivalence: the recognition by YÖK or MEB that a foreign qualification corresponds to a Turkish degree or school certificate.
A qualification earned abroad has no standing in Türkiye until the competent authority declares it equivalent. For university degrees that authority is YÖK, which issues a denklik belgesi through its e-Denklik system after examining the diploma, transcript and diploma supplement, apostilled and accompanied by notarised or consulate-certified Turkish translations; the process commonly takes two to three months. For school-level qualifications, such as GCSEs and A-levels, the provincial education directorate or the Education Counsellor's office in London grants lise denkliği.
We render denklik as “equivalence” and denklik belgesi as “certificate of equivalence”, keeping the Turkish name because Turkish employers and universities will ask for it by that name. “Recognition” is used only when the context is the general concept.
