Turkish translation in Islington

Between Hackney and Haringey

Islington is consistently listed among the London boroughs where Turkish-speaking Londoners are concentrated, though it does not reach the shares the 2021 Census recorded next door in Hackney (4.5%) or Haringey (4.9%). We have no borough-level percentage for Islington that we would be willing to print, so we will describe it qualitatively: the community here is smaller, more dispersed, and often connected by family to the same streets in N4 and N16.

Three sources of work in one borough

The first is civil status. Islington’s register office on Upper Street takes notices of marriage and holds ceremonies, and a Turkish passport holder giving notice will be asked for translations of anything not in English. The second is health: the Whittington in Archway is the local hospital for much of the borough, and records move both ways when treatment starts in one country and continues in the other. The third is education. City, University of London and London Metropolitan University are both in the borough, so we regularly translate a Turkish academic transcript or diploma for an application, and translate UK degree papers into Turkish for graduates going home, where YÖK denklik decides whether the qualification is recognised.
