Marrying in England as a Turkish citizen
Giving notice at a register office, proving you are free to marry, the ceremony itself, and then registering the marriage with the Turkish consulate: here is the order of events for a Turkish citizen marrying in England or Wales, with the translations each office expects.
Before you book anything
Two questions decide how smooth this will be. The first is your immigration position. If you hold indefinite leave to remain, settled status or British citizenship alongside your Turkish nationality, you give notice like anyone else. If you are in the UK on limited leave, you can still marry, but the notice may be referred to the Home Office for investigation and the waiting period can be extended to up to 70 days; if you are outside the UK, you need a Marriage Visitor visa (which does not lead to settlement) or a fiancé(e) visa before you travel. The second question is whether either of you has been married before, because the registrar must see that the earlier marriage ended and that evidence is usually Turkish.
Giving notice at the register office
Both of you attend the register office for the district where you live to give notice of marriage; you must have lived in the district for a minimum period before the appointment, and after notice there is a standard waiting period before the ceremony can take place. GOV.UK lists what a non-UK national brings: a passport, proof of address, evidence of immigration status, evidence of the ending of any previous marriage, and a translation of any documents that are not in English. In practice a Turkish citizen therefore brings a passport (no translation needed for the bilingual data page), a UK proof of address, the immigration status document or share code, and, where relevant, a boşanma kararı with its finality note or a former spouse’s death certificate, each with a certified translation. Registrars work from paper, so bring printed translations and the originals. A Turkish evlenme ehliyet belgesi is not something an English registrar requires; some couples obtain a no-impediment letter from the consulate anyway, and it does no harm, but it does not replace the documents above.
The ceremony and the certificate
Once the waiting period has passed without objection, the ceremony takes place at the register office or an approved venue within the validity of the notice. You will need two witnesses. Afterwards you receive, or can order, a marriage certificate issued by the register office; order two or three certified copies at the time, because one goes to the consulate and others tend to be needed for name changes, banks and, later, immigration applications.
Telling Türkiye about the marriage
The marriage is valid in the UK from the day of the ceremony, but your Turkish civil record (nüfus kaydı) still shows you as single until the marriage is registered. The London consulate (or Manchester or Edinburgh, depending on where you live) registers a UK marriage on production of the UK marriage certificate, your nüfus cüzdanı or kimlik kartı, and, for a British spouse, their full birth certificate and passport, with a £10 postal order for the fee. The consulate’s own note states that for a document issued by a British authority, including a marriage certificate, no outside sworn translation is requested: the consulate deals with the English text itself. So, contrary to what many couples assume, you do not need to have the UK marriage certificate translated into Turkish for this appointment. Where the spouse is a citizen of a third country, their birth certificate must be a multilingual Formül A extract or apostilled, translated and certified through that country’s mission in London. After registration the marriage appears on your nüfus kayıt örneği and a Turkish family record book can be issued; a wife who takes her husband’s surname under Turkish law will also want her Turkish ID and passport updated.
When a Turkish translation of the marriage certificate is needed after all
The consulate handles its own registration, but other Turkish bodies do not have that arrangement. A Turkish bank opening a joint account, a court in a property or inheritance matter, a tapu office where a spouse consents to a sale, or a residence-permit application for a British spouse in Türkiye may all ask for the UK marriage certificate with an apostille and a notarised Turkish translation. The FCDO issues the apostille (paper for GRO-issued certificates); we then produce a noter onaylı Turkish translation in Ankara, which Turkish authorities accept without the consulate step. Details are on the UK marriage certificate page.
Costs and how long it takes
Register office fees for notice and the ceremony are set locally and shown on the council’s site. The consulate registration fee is £10. Translation of a Turkish divorce decree into English costs £40–100 depending on length with us, and a single-status or nüfus document £10–30, delivered as a certified PDF in one to two working days with a printed copy by courier for £30 if you prefer to hand the registrar an original set. A Turkish translation of the UK marriage certificate, notarised in Ankara, is about £6.50 for the translation plus the notary tariff (around £13.50 per page plus a £5 handling fee) and £15 for a Turkish apostille where one is needed on the translation. No UK VAT is charged.
Where couples slip up
- Booking a venue before checking whether notice will be referred to the Home Office, then losing the deposit when the 70-day period runs past the date.
- Bringing a divorce decree without the kesinleşme şerhi, which is the part that shows the divorce is final.
- Assuming the consulate wants a Turkish translation of the UK certificate and paying for one that is not needed.
- Forgetting to register the marriage in Türkiye at all, which surfaces years later during an inheritance or a second marriage.
- Leaving the surname question until the passport renewal, when a decision at registration would have been simpler.
Step by step
-
Settle the immigration question
Check whether you hold settled status, ILR or British citizenship. If not, expect your notice to be referred to the Home Office and allow up to 70 days before the ceremony; if you are abroad, apply for a Marriage Visitor visa or a fiancé(e) visa before travelling. An immigration adviser can tell you which fits, particularly if you intend to stay in the UK after the wedding. Nothing here needs translating yet.
-
Gather proof that you are free to marry
If you have never been married, your passport and status documents are usually enough, though a bekârlık belgesi or nüfus kayıt örneği from e-Devlet is easy to add. If you were married before, obtain the divorce decree with its finality note from the court or e-Devlet, or the former spouse’s death certificate. Send these to us for certified English translation; a divorce judgment takes one to two working days and costs £40–100 depending on length.
-
Give notice at the register office
Book a notice appointment for both of you at the register office for your district after the required period of residence there. Bring passports, proof of address, immigration status evidence, the translated divorce or death documents with the originals, and the fee. The registrar records the notice, which is displayed for the statutory waiting period, and issues the authority for the marriage once that period has passed.
-
Hold the ceremony and collect certificates
Marry within the validity of the notice at the register office or an approved venue, with two witnesses. Order several certified copies of the marriage certificate straight away: one for the Turkish consulate, one for banks and employers if a name changes, and one to keep for any later immigration application.
-
Register the marriage with the Turkish consulate
Book an appointment at the consulate for your area. Take the UK marriage certificate, your kimlik kartı or nüfus cüzdanı, your British spouse’s full birth certificate and passport, and a £10 postal order. The consulate does not ask for an outside translation of UK-issued certificates. A third-country spouse’s birth certificate needs to be a Formül A extract or apostilled, translated and certified through their own consulate. The consulate registration checklist lists everything.
-
Update Turkish records and plan for later use
After registration, download a new nüfus kayıt örneği to confirm the marriage appears, and renew your Turkish ID or passport if a surname has changed. If you expect to use the marriage certificate before a Turkish bank, court or tapu office, have it apostilled by the FCDO and order a notarised Turkish translation from us in Ankara; that is a separate need from the consulate registration.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a no-impediment letter from the Turkish consulate to marry in England?
An English register office does not require it. The consulate issues one for Turkish citizens on request and some couples obtain it as reassurance, but the registrar works from your passport, status evidence and any divorce or death documents.
Does the register office need my nüfus kayıt örneği translated?
Only if you are relying on it to show a previous marriage has ended or to explain a name difference. If you bring it, it must have a certified translation, and we translate it in full with every column and footnote.
Is a translation of the UK marriage certificate needed for the consulate?
No. The consulate’s note says it does not request an outside sworn translation for British-issued passports, birth certificates or marriage certificates. A Turkish translation becomes necessary only when a different Turkish body, such as a bank or court, asks for the certificate.
We married in Scotland. Is the process the same?
Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own notice procedures and forms, and residents there register with the Edinburgh consulate. The translation principles are the same, but check the local registrar’s requirements rather than the GOV.UK England and Wales page.
Can my British spouse apply for Turkish citizenship after we marry?
After three years of marriage a spouse can apply, with evidence including a DBS certificate translated and certified for the consulate. See Turkish citizenship for a British spouse.
