Six months to marry, then a second application

The fiancé(e) and proposed civil partner category sits inside Appendix FM. Entry clearance is granted for six months, you cannot work during that time, and you must marry or form the civil partnership in the UK before applying for leave to remain as a spouse or partner (form FLR(M)). Two applications therefore rely on Turkish documents: the first proves you are free to marry and that the relationship is genuine, the second proves the marriage happened. In between comes an appointment at a register office, which is covered on our notice of marriage page and also needs translations.

The evidence rule you are working to

The translation requirement is the one in paragraph 1(j) of Appendix FM-SE, quoted in the box. For the entry clearance stage you need the original and a full translation that the decision maker can independently verify, dated, with confirmation of accuracy and the translator’s or company representative’s name, signature and contact details. When you later apply for leave to remain after the wedding, the fourth item about certification by a qualified translator and the translator or translation company’s credentials comes into play. Because our certification already carries the company’s legal name, registry number and address, a translation we produce for the fiancé(e) stage can be reused at the FLR(M) stage without being redone. No notarisation is needed at either stage.

Turkish documents for the fiancé(e) stage

• Single-status certificate: a bekârlık belgesi from the nüfus office, or an evlenme ehliyet belgesi. The Home Office does not name a specific Turkish form; what it wants is evidence that you are free to marry.
• Nüfus kayıt örneği with event history, which shows the same thing and any previous marriages.
• Divorce decree with finality note, or a former spouse’s death certificate, if you were married before.
• Name-change court decision where your name differs between documents.
• Evidence of the relationship that happens to be in Turkish: hotel bookings, messages, wedding-planning contracts, family letters. Only what your adviser decides to submit needs translating.
• Bank statements where savings in Türkiye are used to meet the £29,000 financial requirement.

For the spouse stage after the wedding, the UK marriage certificate is in English, so the new Turkish documents are usually limited to a fresh nüfus record if the caseworker asks for one.

What goes wrong specifically on this route

• A single-status certificate issued many months before the application, or before a divorce became final, so it no longer proves anything.
• A divorce judgment translated without the kesinleşme şerhi, which is the part that shows the marriage is over.
• A woman’s single-status document in her maiden name while the passport shows a former married name, with no translator’s note linking the two.
• Only the front of the bekârlık belgesi translated, leaving the issuing office stamp and QR code on the back unrendered.
• Relationship evidence translated selectively so that dates in the statement of the relationship no longer line up with the translated messages.
