Yeminli tercüman — meaning and English translation
A yeminli tercüman is a translator who has taken an oath before a Turkish notary and whose translations that notary can then certify as notarial acts.
Under the Notaries Law Regulation, a translator presents evidence of language competence to a notary and swears an oath (Article 75). From then on that notary can certify the translator's translations, and the translator is described as the notary's yeminli tercüman. The oath is taken at each notary separately; there is no national register, and the Turkish Consulate keeps its own list of translators for consular acts.
We render the term as “sworn translator (notary-sworn)”. The bracketed gloss matters because a reader from a country with court-appointed sworn translators, or from the UK where no such status exists at all, would otherwise assume a different system. Our own translators are sworn before notaries in Ankara, which is what allows us to produce notarised translations there.
