Muvafakatname — meaning and English translation
A muvafakatname is a notarised letter of consent in which a person agrees to an act by another, most commonly a parent consenting to a child's travel or passport.
Turkish law and practice ask for written, notarised consent in a range of situations: a parent allowing a child to travel abroad with the other parent or a relative, a spouse consenting to a family member's application, an owner permitting a tenant to alter premises, a co-owner agreeing to a sale. The muvafakatname is that consent, taken down by a notary or consular officer, with the identity of the person consenting verified on the spot.
We render it as “letter of consent (muvafakatname)”, or “notarised consent” where the sentence needs a noun that shows the form. The act consented to is translated precisely, because a consent that is broader or narrower than the original changes its legal effect.
