Vekaletname — meaning and English translation

A vekaletname is drawn up by a Turkish notary, or by the notary unit of a Turkish consulate abroad, and is signed by the principal in the notary's presence. A genel vekaletname authorises a broad range of acts; an özel vekaletname is limited to a named transaction, such as selling a specified property or representing the principal in a named court case. Deeds for property sales must identify the property and the attorney precisely, and the consulate requires the principal's new-type identity card for them.

We translate it as “power of attorney”, stating the type (general or special) and keeping the notary's registration number, date and journal (yevmiye) entry in the translation exactly as they appear.

HM Land Registry, under Practice Guide 8, accepts a foreign-language power of attorney only with a translation, and UK banks and solicitors apply similar rules. See vekaletname translation.
