General Register Office (GRO) — explained for Turkish readers

The General Register Office, part of HM Passport Office, keeps the central indexes of births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships registered in England and Wales since 1837 and issues certified copies of those entries. Scotland's records are held by National Records of Scotland and Northern Ireland's by GRONI. The GRO also records births of British nationals abroad.

The Turkish reader's point of reference is the Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık İşleri Genel Müdürlüğü, but the systems differ in shape. Turkish records are family-based, so one nüfus kayıt örneği shows parents, spouse and children together; GRO records are event-based, so each birth, marriage or death is a separate certificate with no link to the others. When a Turkish office asks for a UK “aile kayıt örneği”, the answer is a set of individual certificates.
