Diploma supplement or HEAR: what each contains

The diploma supplement (diploma eki) is the European-format description of a qualification: eight sections covering the holder, the qualification, its level and length, the contents and results, the function of the qualification, additional information, certification and a description of the national higher education system. UK universities issue it either under that name or as the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR), which adds a record of modules and marks and sometimes verified extra-curricular achievements. Both are produced by the academic registry, are several pages long and are often supplied electronically with a verification code rather than a wet signature.

For a Turkish assessor the supplement answers questions the degree certificate does not: the level of the award on the UK framework (FHEQ level 6 for a bachelor's, 7 for a master's, 8 for a doctorate), the number of credits, the mode of study and the entry requirements. That is why YÖK and universities keep asking for it.

YÖK and the EU wording

YÖK's application list requires the diploma supplement for degrees obtained in European Union member states, together with the original of its Turkish translation certified by a Turkish notary or a Turkish mission abroad. The UK is no longer a member state, so the supplement is not formally compulsory for a UK degree in that wording; in practice e-Denklik assessors request it whenever the transcript leaves a question about level, credits or programme length, and submitting it with the first application avoids a request that stops the clock. Turkish universities admitting a UK graduate to a master's or doctoral programme, and faculties deciding a transfer, use the same document to place the applicant.

Preparing it for the notary in Ankara

1. Ask the university for a signed paper copy or print the verified electronic version.
2. Have a UK notary or solicitor certify it; the FCDO does not legalise an unsigned printout or a qualification document on its own. The certified copy qualifies for the e-Apostille (£35) or the paper apostille (£45); our UK partner can arrange either for the FCDO fee plus £20.
3. Send us the scan. We translate all eight sections, including the description of the UK higher education system, and the certification and apostille. Framework levels and credit types (CATS, ECTS) are kept as printed with the Turkish description in brackets; module marks in a HEAR are copied as awarded.
4. A translator sworn before an Ankara notary signs and the notary attaches the translation to a copy of the apostilled document. The supplement can be notarised in the same visit as the degree certificate and transcript.

Repeated sections and the page count

Section 8 of every UK diploma supplement is the same standard text describing the UK system, and a HEAR carries a page of explanatory notes. We translate these once and reuse our own wording for the same standard text on later orders, but the character count still includes them, because the notary certifies a complete document. Ask for a quotation from the scan; we tell you the count before you pay.

Price and delivery

A diploma supplement runs to 4 to 8 pages of 1,000 characters, a HEAR with a long module list up to 10: £26 to £65 for the translation, with the notary tariff at about £13.50 per page and £5 handling on top. An apostille of the notarised translation is £15 if requested. No UK VAT is charged. Allow 2 to 3 working days for translation and a day for the notary; the fast option halves the translation time for 60 per cent more. Scans for the e-Denklik upload go by e-mail; the wet-sealed original is sent by courier for £30, or to a Turkish address at a lower rate. We do not offer collection in the UK.
