Turkish e-Apostil now covers multilingual civil-status extracts
Since 28 December 2023 the multilingual birth, marriage and death extracts can be apostilled electronically through e-Devlet. Useful from London — but a multilingual extract still needs an English translation for UK bodies.
What changed
Türkiye's e-Apostil service, reached through e-Devlet, has widened its coverage steadily since 2019. Adli sicil kayıtları and court decisions came first, nüfus kayıt örneği followed in June 2021, and since 28 December 2023 the multilingual civil-status extracts — the Formül A birth extract, the Formül B marriage extract and the death extract — can be apostilled electronically as well. All of it can be done from a laptop in London. Nobody has to queue at a kaymakamlık on your behalf.
The trap for UK applications
A multilingual extract prints its field headings in several languages, which leads people to conclude that no translation is needed. For a UK body that conclusion fails. The United Kingdom is not a party to the CIEC convention on multilingual extracts, so a caseworker treats a Formül A as a foreign-language document: the entries themselves, place names, and any annotation added by the nüfus müdürlüğü are in Turkish. A Home Office file, a register office or a probate registry still wants an English translation with the accuracy statement, date, translator's name, signature and contact details.
