Turkish doctors: GMC registration documents

The path in outline

A doctor with a primary medical qualification from a Turkish faculty of medicine applies to the GMC for registration with a licence to practise. Before the application is decided you demonstrate English (an IELTS Academic or OET score at the level the GMC sets), demonstrate knowledge and skills (for most Turkish graduates, by passing PLAB 1 and PLAB 2, or by an accepted postgraduate qualification or sponsorship route), and then submit the application in GMC Online with the documents. The GMC verifies the primary medical qualification through its verification partner, checks your fitness to practise history, and invites you to an identity check in the UK before registration is granted. The stages are the GMC’s to define and they change; the current application guide on the GMC site is the reference, and nothing here promises an outcome. What the GMC says about translations

The GMC’s guidance on translating documents that are not in English is specific. You must supply a copy of the document in its original language together with a complete English translation made by a professional translator or translation service (the guidance’s own phrase is quoted in the box on this page); the translation must carry the translator’s or service’s contact details and be stamped and signed; and the translation must be made directly from the original language, not from an intermediate translation. In practical terms the GMC wants to be able to contact whoever translated the document, wants every page translated, and wants a translation from Turkish rather than from a university’s English version. The Turkish documents in a GMC file

• Tıp diploması (primary medical qualification), translated in full; the GMC also verifies it through its verification service, which contacts the university. Details.
• Transcript where requested, and the internship completion document (intörnlük belgesi) where the GMC asks for evidence of the internship year. Details.
• Certificate of good standing from the Turkish medical authority: the GMC lists which body it accepts for Türkiye, and the certificate must be recent, so obtain it late in the process.
• Uzmanlık belgesi (specialist certificate) where you apply on the basis of postgraduate training or seek specialist registration.
• Employment evidence for the recent practice history: hospital letters, SGK service record, references. Details.
• Identity documents: passport (bilingual data page, not translated); a name-change decision where names differ.
• A Turkish criminal record certificate is not part of the GMC application but is required for the Skilled Worker visa in a medical occupation code and by employers, so most doctors have it translated at the same time.

Timing and costs

English tests and PLAB sittings have their own booking lead times; PLAB 2 is taken in Manchester and requires travel. The GMC’s application fee, the PLAB fees and the annual retention fee are on its site and change each year. Good-standing certificates have a validity period, so the sequence is usually: English, PLAB 1, PLAB 2, then the good-standing certificate and the application, then the identity check. Translations for a typical file, a diploma, a transcript, a good-standing certificate and two employment letters, come to £60–110 with us, in one to two working days; the criminal record certificate with its e-apostille adds £10–20. Where GMC applications lose time

• A diploma translated from the university’s English back page rather than the Turkish front, producing two versions of the degree title.
• A good-standing certificate that expired before the GMC assessed the application.
• Employment letters that do not cover the recent-practice period the GMC asks about.
• A translation without a stamp or contact details, which the GMC’s guidance specifically calls for.
• Names on the diploma that differ from the passport (a marriage surname, a dropped Turkish character) without a translator’s note.

After registration

Registration with a licence allows you to take up a post; the employer will run its own pre-employment checks, including the criminal record certificate and references, and the Skilled Worker (Health and Care) visa application follows with the certificate of sponsorship.
