Azilname — meaning and English translation
An azilname is the notarial deed by which a principal revokes a power of attorney previously given, taking effect once it is notified to the attorney.
A Turkish power of attorney can be withdrawn at any time, but withdrawal is a formal act. The principal goes to a notary, or to the consulate's notary unit, and executes an azilname naming the attorney and the deed being revoked; the notary then serves notice on the attorney and, where the power concerned property, the revocation can be notified to the Land Registry Office as well. Until notice reaches the attorney, acts done in good faith under the old deed may still bind the principal, which is why people revoke a power before a dispute rather than after.
We translate azilname as “deed of revocation of power of attorney”, shortened to “revocation” once the full term has appeared. “Cancellation” is avoided because it suggests the original deed was defective.
