Tecil — meaning and English translation
Tecil is the deferment of Turkish military service, granted to students until an age limit and to workers abroad in renewable periods, on application through a consulate.
Turkish military service can be postponed rather than avoided. Students in recognised education obtain a deferment up to an age ceiling that depends on the level of study (29, 33 or 35), on production of an enrolment letter from their institution. Citizens working abroad with a valid immigration status can defer in two-year blocks until 35, applying through the consulate with proof of employment and residence. Missing a renewal date makes the person yoklama kaçağı or bakaya, with consequences at the border.
Our rendering is “deferment (tecil)”; in a phrase, “deferment of military service”. We avoid “postponement” after the first mention to keep the term stable across a client's documents, and “exemption” is never used, because tecil defers the obligation without removing it.
