UK student status letter translation into Turkish

The enrolment letter and what it must show

A student status letter (öğrenci belgesi, kayıt belgesi) is issued by the university's student records office or registry, usually on request through the student portal, and confirms that a named person is enrolled on a named programme, with the mode of study, the start date, the expected end date and the current year of study. Colleges and sixth forms issue the same letter through the head or the registrar. Some universities call it a certificate of enrolment, a confirmation of study or a council tax exemption letter; the last of these omits the programme end date, which Turkish offices want, so ask for the full version. The letter is signed or bears a printed signature and often a verification code.

Who asks for it in Türkiye

• Askerlik: student deferment. A Turkish citizen of military age studying in the UK defers service year by year on evidence of enrolment, to the age limits set for each level of study. The Milan consulate's note records that applications in student status are received by the Education Attaché at the consulate; in London the Education Counsellor's Office performs that role. • SGK and pension funds. A dependent child over 18 remains covered by a parent's Turkish health insurance or receives an orphan's pension only while in education, and the fund asks for annual proof.
• Turkish family courts. Maintenance for a child in higher education (iştirak nafakası beyond majority) is granted on evidence of continuing study.
• Turkish universities assessing a transfer or a year abroad, and scholarship bodies paying a stipend.
• Banks and landlords in Türkiye checking a student's status for an account or a lease.

Ask the education office before you order

For deferment applications lodged in London, the Education Counsellor's Office reads the English letter. Its published denklik rule asks for a sworn translation only when a document is in a language other than English, and student deferment files have been handled in the same way. The translation is needed when the letter goes to an office in Türkiye: SGK, a court, a university or the askerlik şubesi reviewing a file after your return. We say this plainly so that you do not pay for a translation the consulate will not ask you for.

Notarisation in Ankara, apostille only on request

For Turkish offices we translate the letter, a translator sworn before an Ankara notary signs, and the notary attaches the translation to a copy of the letter. SGK and universities have accepted that form to date without legalisation. A court sometimes wants the letter apostilled; because a university letter carries no public officer's signature, a UK notary or solicitor certifies it first and the FCDO apostilles the certification, which qualifies for the e-Apostille (£35, about two working days). Terms that need a note

UK programme names and modes of study do not map neatly onto Turkish ones. We translate “full-time undergraduate, Year 2 of 3” as the Turkish reader expects (lisans, 2. sınıf, örgün öğretim) and keep the English in brackets; a foundation year, a placement year and a part-time master's are each explained in a translator's note so that an askerlik officer or a court can apply the Turkish rule to the right category. Dates are written in full to avoid day-month confusion.

Price and delivery

The letter is one page: £6.50 for the translation, plus the notary tariff of about £13.50 and £5 handling, so about £25 in total; no UK VAT is charged. Translation is done the next working day and the notary signs the same or the following day. A scan is e-mailed; the wet-sealed original goes by courier for £30 to the UK or at a lower rate to a parent or lawyer in Türkiye. Because most offices want a fresh letter each academic year, many clients order the translation annually. Collection is not available.
