Aile cüzdanı — meaning and English translation
The aile cüzdanı is the Turkish family record book issued at marriage, recording the spouses and each child born to them; the international version has multilingual headings.
At the wedding ceremony the registrar hands the couple a booklet, the evlenme cüzdanı or aile cüzdanı, whose first pages record the marriage and whose later pages are filled in as children are born. Older booklets are handwritten and stamped; the uluslararası aile cüzdanı, a later design, carries headings in several languages under a CIEC convention, though its entries remain in Turkish. Divorce and death are noted in it by the Nüfus Müdürlüğü.
Our rendering is “family record book (aile cüzdanı)”. We do not call it a marriage certificate, because Türkiye also issues a separate evlenme kayıt örneği from the register, and a caseworker needs to know which was provided. Every completed page is translated; blank pages are described as blank.
UK passport and visa caseworkers accept it as evidence of marriage and parentage. See Turkish marriage certificate translation.
