Formül A / Formül B — meaning and English translation
Formül A and Formül B are the multilingual extracts from Turkish birth and marriage records issued under CIEC Convention No. 16, with headings in several languages.
The International Commission on Civil Status (CIEC) agreed in 1976 a set of standard extracts whose headings appear in the languages of the member states: Formül A for a birth, Formül B for a marriage and Formül C for a death. Türkiye issues them from the civil register through the Nüfus Müdürlüğü, and since December 2023 they can be apostilled electronically. In a fellow member state such as Germany or France the extract is accepted without translation, and the Turkish Consulate in London requests a Formül A when registering a marriage to a third-country spouse.
We render the titles as “multilingual extract from the birth record (Formül A)” and “multilingual extract from the marriage record (Formül B)”, and translate the Turkish-language entries and codes, not just the pre-printed headings.
The UK is not a party to the convention, so UK bodies treat the extract as a foreign document and expect a certified translation. See Formül A/B multilingual extracts: do they need translating?
