· checked 29 August 2026Which HMRC document does SGK want?
The document that matters for buying back your UK years with the SGK is the National Insurance record (sigortalılık süresi belgesi, NI kaydı). GOV.UK explains that the record shows what you have paid up to the start of the current tax year, any National Insurance credits you have received and whether gaps mean some years do not count towards your State Pension, and that you can request a printed National Insurance statement online if you live in the UK, or online or by post if you live abroad. The printed statement from HMRC lists every tax year with the class of contribution, which is exactly what the SGK officer needs to convert UK periods into days of Turkish service.
Self-employed applicants and anyone proving income rather than insured periods use two further documents. GOV.UK says you can get evidence of your earnings, the SA302, for the last 4 years once you have sent your Self Assessment tax return, and that you can also get a tax year overview for any year; both are downloaded from your HMRC online account under Self Assessment. A full SA100 tax return is only needed if a court or tax office asks for it.
SGK's own wording on translations
The UK and Türkiye have had a social security convention since 1961, so the UK counts as an agreement country. For agreement countries SGK's yurtdışı borçlanması page asks for the document issued by the foreign insurance institution showing the insured periods, together with its original, translated either by sworn translators in Türkiye or by translators accredited by a Turkish mission abroad and certified by that mission. The alternative is a hizmet belgesi from the Çalışma ve Sosyal Güvenlik Ataşeliği in London, which prepares it from your HMRC record. Our translation, sworn before an Ankara notary, is the first route in SGK's text. Read SGK yurtdışı borçlanması for the 2026 daily rates and the application form, and buying back your years abroad from the UK for the sequence.
Other Turkish bodies that ask for HMRC papers
- Gelir İdaresi Başkanlığı. A Turkish tax office checking foreign income declared in Türkiye or applying the UK–Türkiye double taxation agreement; a UK certificate of residence from HMRC belongs to the same family of documents.
- Family courts. SA302s and tax year overviews are the standard proof of a self-employed person's income in a maintenance case.
- Vehicle import and kesin dönüş. Customs and the consulate sometimes take tax records as evidence of the 24 months' residence abroad.
- Turkish banks. Income proof for a loan or mortgage.
Apostille: not in SGK's text, sometimes asked for
SGK's rule quoted above mentions the original and the translation but not an apostille. Some provincial offices ask for one anyway. An HMRC printout or online download carries no signature the FCDO can verify, so it will not be legalised directly; a UK solicitor or notary certifies the copy first and the FCDO apostilles that certification, on paper for £45 or as an e-Apostille for £35. Confirm with your SGK il müdürlüğü before spending the money. If the answer is no, a clear scan of the HMRC document is enough for the Ankara notary. Compare the routes on apostille and legalisation.
Cost and delivery
A National Insurance statement covering a full working life is 2 to 4 pages of 1,000 characters, so £13.00 to £26.00; an SA302 with tax year overview is 2 to 3 pages, £13.00 to £19.50; a complete tax return 8 to 12 pages. The Ankara notary tariff of about £13.50 per page plus £5 handling is added for the notarised version, and an apostille of the translation costs £15 if SGK or a court wants it. No UK VAT is charged. Translation takes 1 to 2 working days, the notary signs the same or the next working day, and the PDF reaches you by e-mail. SGK keeps the wet-sealed notarised original on file, so it travels by courier for £30, either to you in the UK or to the person filing the application in Türkiye. We cannot offer collection.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a screenshot of my NI record from the HMRC app?
SGK wants a document issued by the institution, and the printed statement HMRC posts to you is the safest form. A PDF downloaded from your HMRC account has been accepted to date by many offices; a phone screenshot is regularly refused.
Should I get the hizmet belgesi from the London ataşelik instead?
Either route satisfies SGK. The ataşelik prepares its document from your HMRC record and may take weeks; the notarised translation is ready in about three working days once you have the HMRC statement. Some applicants file both.
My NI record has years marked as not full. Does that matter for borçlanma?
SGK counts the periods actually shown as paid or credited. We translate each year's status exactly as HMRC states it, including partial years, so that the officer can decide what to count.
Does the translation need to go through the consulate?
No. SGK's text gives two options: a sworn translator in Türkiye or a translator accredited by a Turkish mission. Ours is the first. A translation notarised in Ankara has been accepted by SGK offices to date without any consular step.
Can you translate my P60s as well?
Yes, and SGK offices sometimes ask for them alongside the NI record. See P60, P45 and payslip translation; the pricing is the same per page.
