UK–Turkey enhanced free trade agreement: negotiation rounds
The current agreement has covered goods since 1 January 2021. Talks on an enhanced version reaching services, digital trade and procurement are under way. Nothing in the paperwork changes until a new text is in force.
What exists and what is being negotiated
Goods trade between the two countries has run under the UK–Türkiye trade agreement since 1 January 2021, and bilateral trade was worth about £27.8 billion in 2024. Both governments have said the goods-only shape is too narrow and have opened talks on an enhanced agreement taking in services, digital trade, data and public procurement. Rounds are held periodically and announced afterwards. Until a text is signed, ratified and in force, nothing an exporter does changes.
The document point exporters keep missing
A.TR movement certificates stopped serving UK–Türkiye trade when the customs union arrangement ended for the UK. Preference is claimed instead by an origin declaration made out on the invoice or another commercial document, in the prescribed wording. Customs at either end reads that wording literally, so a loose translation of it is worth more trouble than it saves. We translate the declaration exactly as the agreement sets it out and keep the invoice layout intact.
Company paperwork on the Turkish side
Setting up a subsidiary or an agency in Türkiye pulls in a certificate of incorporation, a certificate of good standing, a Companies House extract and articles of association, each apostilled and then translated into Turkish and notarised there.
