Children of Mavi Kart holders: simplified citizenship route
In 2025 the Ministry of the Interior removed the prior conditions that applied to children entered in the Mavi Kart register when they apply for Turkish citizenship. For British-raised children of former Turkish citizens this is the route to ask about.
The change
Mavi Kart, created by Article 28 of Law 5901, lets someone who has left Turkish citizenship with permission keep most civil rights. Holders may live, work, own property and inherit in Türkiye; they may not vote, perform military service, hold permanent civil-service posts or import goods duty free. During 2025 the Ministry of the Interior lifted the conditions that had applied to children recorded in the Mavi Kart register when they sought Turkish citizenship, so those children can be taken into citizenship without satisfying them.
Who this helps in the UK
It matters most to families where a parent released Turkish citizenship in order to naturalise elsewhere, before dual nationality became routine, and whose children then grew up British. If your child is on the Mavi Kart register and you would like a Turkish passport for them, this is the question to put to the consulate.
What you will be asked to produce
Expect the UK full birth certificate, the parents' identity documents, the card itself and evidence of the parent's former citizenship. UK-issued documents go to the FCDO for an apostille before they are translated into Turkish. There is one useful exception: the London consulate handles UK passports, birth certificates and marriage certificates in house and does not ask for an outside translation of them.
