Life in the UK test: latest handbook edition

The test is drawn from one Home Office handbook, and questions come only from that book. Check which edition is current before buying study materials, because second-hand copies of a superseded edition circulate for years.

One book, one syllabus

Every question in the Life in the UK test is taken from the handbook published by the Home Office, and nothing outside it is examinable. That makes the edition the only thing you need to get right when you buy.The current figures are published on the official page linked from this update; check them there, because they change without notice. Practice apps and revision guides sold by third parties are not part of the requirement and vary a great deal in how faithfully they follow the book.

When you have to sit it

The knowledge of language and life requirement applies to settlement and to naturalisation, and to ECAA settlement applications as well. You take the test once; the pass is recorded and does not expire, so a pass obtained for indefinite leave to remain still counts when you apply for citizenship later. Keep the unique reference number, because that is what the caseworker checks against.

The language half of the requirement

The test covers the life half. The language half is met by a qualification at the required level or by a degree taught in English, and for a Turkish degree that means a certified translation of the diploma with confirmation of the language of instruction, or a UK ENIC assessment. See indefinite leave to remain, naturalisation and the guide to naturalising with Turkish documents.
