Turkish translation in Belfast

A very small community, dealt with from Edinburgh

Northern Ireland recorded 659 residents born in Türkiye at the 2021 Census, the smallest of the four UK totals. Consular matters are not handled from London: the Consulate General in Edinburgh covers Northern Ireland as well as Scotland, so appointments for powers of attorney, consent letters or Turkish registration mean a flight to Edinburgh rather than to Heathrow. Because that journey is expensive, it is worth checking whether the act really needs a consulate; many documents for use in Türkiye are accepted with a translation notarised by a Turkish notary instead, which needs nothing from you but a scan.

Northern Ireland’s own paperwork

Civil registration here is separate from England and Wales. Birth, marriage and death certificates are issued through the General Register Office for Northern Ireland and the local district registrars, and marriage notice follows Northern Ireland procedure with its own forms. Healthcare is delivered by health and social care trusts, so a patient’s records come from Belfast Health and Social Care Trust rather than from an NHS trust of the English type. Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University take transcripts and diplomas in English. When such a document goes to Türkiye, the FCDO Legalisation Office issues the apostille, as it does for the rest of the UK, before any translation is made.

Two directions, two different processes

Coming into Northern Ireland, a Turkish document needs a certified translation that meets the gov.uk requirements — the same certification used in Great Britain, since immigration, passport and professional registration rules are UK-wide. Going the other way, a Northern Irish document needs an FCDO apostille first, then a Turkish translation, usually notarised in Ankara.
