Guides Turkish ↔ English
Receiving your Turkish pension in the UK
An SGK pension can be drawn while you live in Britain, but it brings paperwork in both directions: proof of life for SGK, a Turkish bank that will pay you, and English translations of the pension record for HMRC, a mortgage lender or the Home Office. This guide sets out the routine.
Who this is for
You have enough insured days in Türkiye, perhaps topped up by buying back your years abroad, and you intend to draw the pension while living in the UK. Or you already receive it and a UK body has asked for evidence of the income. The pension itself is a Turkish matter between you and SGK; the UK side is about declaring it and proving it.
The routine at a glance
Apply to SGK when you meet the age and day conditions, from Türkiye, through e-Devlet, or through a relative with a power of attorney; nominate a Turkish bank account; keep SGK satisfied each year that you are alive; and translate the pension record whenever a UK body wants to see it. None of these is difficult, but each has a way of going wrong for someone who is not in Türkiye.
Applying and being paid
SGK pays retirement pensions into an account at a Turkish bank or through the PTT, in lira. There is no arrangement for SGK to pay into a UK bank, so you need a Turkish account that you can operate from abroad, which is the subject of the bank account guide. The application can be filed on e-Devlet by citizens who have a password, or in person by someone holding a vekaletname. A pension granted with bought-back years is subject to the condition in Law 3201 about ending paid work abroad, discussed on the Turkish pension abroad page; check that before you apply.
Proof of life
SGK verifies pensioners living in Türkiye against the civil registry. For a pensioner abroad the registry cannot see you, so SGK expects periodic confirmation that you are alive, a yoklama or hayatta olduğuna dair belge. The usual way is a document from the Turkish consulate for your area, obtained at an appointment with your kimlik kartı, and sent to SGK; some banks and SGK offices accept alternative forms. The interval and the exact method have changed over the years, so confirm the current rule with SGK or the bank paying you rather than relying on what a neighbour did. A pension stopped for a missed yoklama is reinstated once the proof arrives, but the gap in payment is a nuisance.
The UK side: declaring and proving the income
A UK resident’s foreign pension is usually within the scope of UK tax, subject to the UK–Türkiye double taxation agreement; whether and how much to declare is a question for HMRC guidance or an accountant, not for us. What we can say is that when HMRC, a mortgage lender, a benefits assessor or the Home Office (for a family visa or settlement application where the pension counts as income) asks for evidence, the document they want is the pension award letter or the monthly pension statement (emekli maaş belgesi) from SGK, which is downloadable from e-Devlet with a barcode, and sometimes the bank statement showing receipts. Those are in Turkish, and each of those bodies expects a certified English translation: HMRC has, in our clients’ experience, asked for foreign income documents to be translated; lenders apply their own underwriting rules and generally want the translation certified; the Home Office rule for family applications asks for a full translation with the translator’s details and, for applications inside the UK, the company’s credentials. Our pension statement translation is designed to meet all of those at once.
Costs and timing
- SGK application: no fee; processing a few weeks to a few months.
- Consulate proof-of-life document: a small consular fee; appointment lead times in London can be weeks.
- Translation of an SGK award letter or pension statement: £10–20; a six-month Turkish bank statement £20–40; certified PDF in one to two working days; £30 for a printed set. No UK VAT.
- Translation of a UK document into Turkish for SGK, for example a letter about UK benefits or employment status where SGK asks: £6.50 per page, notarised in Ankara if required.
Pitfalls
- Missing the proof-of-life deadline and having the pension suspended.
- A Turkish bank account that goes dormant because the debit card expired and could not be renewed from abroad.
- Not telling HMRC about the pension and receiving a query years later.
- Sending a UK lender a screenshot of the e-Devlet page without a translation.
- Applying for the pension while still employed in the UK without checking the Law 3201 condition.
What we do
We translate the SGK award letter, pension statements and Turkish bank statements into certified English for UK bodies, and where SGK or the consulate asks for a UK document in Turkish, we translate and, if needed, notarise it in Ankara. Tax, benefit and eligibility questions belong to HMRC, SGK or a professional adviser.
Step by step
-
Confirm eligibility and the Law 3201 condition
Check your insured days and age against the pension conditions on e-Devlet or with SGK. If any of the days were bought back under Law 3201, ask SGK how the condition about paid work abroad applies while you live in the UK. Do this before you give up a UK job or apply; the answer shapes the timing.
-
Have a Turkish bank account ready
SGK pays into a Turkish bank or PTT account in lira. Open or reactivate an account that you can operate from the UK, with online banking and a card that can be renewed by post or through a relative. Nominate that account in the pension application.
-
Apply to SGK
File the retirement application through e-Devlet, or give a relative a power of attorney to file in person at the SGK directorate. Attach the kimlik details and the bank account. SGK issues an award letter (tahsis) stating the start date and the monthly amount; download it, because it is the document UK bodies later ask for.
-
Set up the proof-of-life routine
Ask SGK or the paying bank how and how often it needs confirmation that you are alive for a pensioner abroad. Book the consulate appointment before the deadline each time, obtain the document with your kimlik kartı and send it as instructed. Diarise the next date as soon as one is done.
-
Tell HMRC and get advice on tax
Foreign pension income is normally within UK tax for a UK resident, subject to the UK–Türkiye double taxation agreement. Read HMRC’s guidance on foreign income or consult an accountant, and register for self-assessment if required. Keep the translated award letter with your tax papers.
-
Translate the record when a UK body asks
When HMRC, a lender, a benefits assessor or the Home Office asks for evidence, download the emekli maaş belgesi or the monthly statement from e-Devlet and, if relevant, the bank statement showing receipts, and send them to us. We deliver certified English translations in one to two working days, £10–20 for the statement and £20–40 for a six-month bank statement.
Frequently asked questions
Can SGK pay my pension into my UK bank account?
No. SGK pays into Turkish bank or PTT accounts in lira. You transfer to the UK yourself or use the Turkish card abroad.
How often do I need to prove I am alive?
The rule for pensioners abroad has changed more than once. Ask SGK or the paying bank what applies now; the consulate issues the document once you know the deadline.
Is my Turkish pension taxed in the UK?
Usually it falls within UK tax for a UK resident, subject to the double taxation agreement. That is a matter for HMRC guidance or an accountant, not for a translation company.
Which document do I translate for a mortgage application?
Lenders generally want the SGK award letter or a recent pension statement plus bank statements showing the payments. We translate all three formats and certify them.
