HM Land Registry — explained for Turkish readers
The government body that records ownership of land and property in England and Wales. Its title register is the UK counterpart of the Turkish tapu.
HM Land Registry keeps the register of land and property ownership in England and Wales. Each registered title has a title number, a register showing the owner, mortgages and restrictions, and a title plan. A copy of the register, obtained online for a small fee, is what a bank or a Turkish notary means by a “UK title deed”. Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate registers.
The Turkish counterpart is the Tapu ve Kadastro Genel Müdürlüğü, and the tapu senedi is broadly comparable to the register entry. One practical difference: a Turkish tapu transaction is completed in person at the tapu müdürlüğü, whereas an English transfer is completed by solicitors and registered afterwards.
