Turkish Consulate FAQs
Which translations the Turkish consulates in London, Edinburgh and Manchester do themselves, when they require a translator from their own list, how our Ankara notarised route fits, and what to bring to registrations and notary appointments.
Türkiye has consulates general in London, Edinburgh (covering Scotland and Northern Ireland) and Manchester, plus an honorary consulate in Cardiff. Their translation rules differ from those of Turkish offices inside Türkiye. For UK passports, birth certificates and marriage certificates used in the consulate's own registrations, the London Consulate states that no outside translation is requested. Where an outside translation is required, the consulate's notes refer to translators on its registered list followed by tercüme tasdiki at its notary unit. We are not on that list. Where a document is going to an authority inside Türkiye, a translation notarised in Ankara is accepted, and that is what we provide. Do I need a translation of my child's UK birth certificate to register the birth at the consulate?
According to the London Consulate's own note, no. It states that for documents obtained from British authorities such as passports, birth certificates and marriage certificates, an outside sworn translation is not requested; the consulate handles them itself. Bring the full (long-form) birth certificate and the parents' identity documents within the registration window. See registering a UK birth at the Turkish Consulate.
When does the consulate require a translation from its registered list?
Its notes give examples: a GRO single-status certificate for marriage purposes, a DBS certificate for citizenship by marriage, a UK pension statement for duty-free vehicle import, a UK medical report for driving-licence renewal. For these the translator must be on the consulate's list and the translation is then certified (tercüme tasdiki) at the notary unit. We tell you if your document falls into this category, because we are not on that list.
Are you a consulate-registered translator?
No. Hacettepe Translation is not currently on the London Consulate's translator list. Our route for Türkiye is the notarised translation made in Ankara, which Turkish authorities inside Türkiye accept. For acts the consulate itself performs with a list requirement, use a listed translator; we would rather say so than sell you the wrong document.
Does the consulate accept an Ankara notarised translation?
For its own list-based acts, its notes point to the registered list. For documents you are submitting to an office in Türkiye (nüfus, tapu, court, YÖK, SGK), the Ankara notarised translation is the standard format. Ask the consulate which office will process your file; if it is forwarded to Türkiye, the Ankara route usually applies.
Does a UK document need an apostille before the consulate will act on it?
For a UK divorce registration under Article 27/A, yes: the apostilled final order plus translation. For birth and marriage registration the consulate's notes list the full certificate and identity documents; check the current note for the act you need. For anything forwarded to a Turkish office, assume an FCDO apostille is needed.
What do I need to register a UK marriage?
The UK marriage certificate, your Turkish identity document, and for a British spouse their full birth certificate and passport; the consulate lists a £10 postal order. I need a power of attorney for Türkiye. Consulate or Turkish notary?
Both work. At the consulate's notary unit you sign in person by appointment (one act per appointment, new-type kimlik kartı needed for property matters). Alternatively a Turkish notary in Türkiye can draw it up if you are there, or a UK notary can prepare it with an FCDO apostille and we produce the notarised Turkish translation in Ankara. My British spouse does not speak Turkish. Can they sign at the consulate?
The consulate requires a sworn Turkish interpreter to attend notary acts for non-Turkish speakers. Ask the consulate what it requires of the interpreter when booking; we can advise on interpreting at consulate appointments and tell you whether we can supply someone who meets its condition.
Which consulate covers me?
London covers England and Wales, Edinburgh covers Scotland and Northern Ireland, and Manchester covers the north of England; the honorary consulate in Cardiff provides limited services.
