Deed poll (name change) translation into Turkish

A deed poll (isim değişikliği beyanı) is a signed declaration that you have abandoned one name and adopted another. GOV.UK explains that if you are 16 or over you can make a deed poll yourself and start using a new name, which it calls an unenrolled deed poll, and that if you are 18 or over you can apply to put your name change on public record through the High Court, an enrolled deed poll, which costs £53.05. Most people in the UK use the unenrolled form, prepared by a solicitor or an online service and signed before two witnesses. HM Passport Office, the DVLA and banks accept it, and the new name then appears on the passport and driving licence.
For Türkiye the distinction matters, because the FCDO will only apostille a document that carries the signature of a UK public officer. An enrolled deed poll bears the seal of the Royal Courts of Justice and can go straight to the Legalisation Office. An unenrolled deed poll is a private document, so a UK notary or solicitor must first certify it; the FCDO then apostilles the notary's or solicitor's signature. Either version is eligible for the e-Apostille (£35, usually within two working days) as well as the paper service (£45).
When a Turkish body asks for it
A deed poll does not change your name in the Turkish register. A Turkish citizen's name or surname is changed by a court decision in Türkiye, and the nüfus müdürlüğü records only that. The deed poll is used to explain why the name on a UK document differs from the name in the family register:
- Birth registration at the consulate. The London consulate's note asks a mother whose surname on the child's UK birth certificate differs from her Turkish record to produce her deed poll with an FCDO apostille.
- Passport and consular applications where the UK passport is in the new name and the Turkish identity documents are in the old one.
- Nüfus name-change applications supported by evidence that the new name is already in use abroad; courts treat the apostilled deed poll as evidence, not as the change itself.
- Tapu, banks and notaries in Türkiye when a property, an account or a power of attorney is in one name and your passport is in another.
- YÖK and MEB when a degree or school certificate is in a former name.

Route to a translation Turkish offices accept
- Have an unenrolled deed poll certified by a UK notary or solicitor; an enrolled one needs no certification.
- Obtain the FCDO apostille, on paper or as an e-Apostille. We can order it through a UK partner for the FCDO fee plus £20.
- Send us the scan. We translate the deed, the witness details, any solicitor's certification and the apostille into Turkish, and a translator sworn before an Ankara notary signs it; the notary attaches a copy of the apostilled deed.

How names are handled
We reproduce both the old and the new name exactly as the deed spells them, without adapting them to Turkish orthography, and we add a translator's note where the Turkish register writes the old name with ç, ş, ğ, ı, ö or ü and the deed does not. Price and delivery
A deed poll with its certification and apostille is 1 to 2 pages of 1,000 characters: £6.50 to £13.00 for the translation, plus the Ankara notary tariff of about £13.50 per page and £5 handling, and £15 if the translation itself needs an apostille. No UK VAT is charged. Translation takes 1 to 2 working days and the notary a further day. The scan arrives by e-mail; the wet-sealed original, which the receiving office keeps, is sent by courier for £30. We do not have a UK office for collection.

Frequently asked questions
My deed poll was made online and signed by two friends. Can it be apostilled?
Not on its own. A UK notary or solicitor must certify it first, and the FCDO then legalises that certification. Many solicitors do this for a small fee; the e-Apostille is available afterwards.
Will the nüfus müdürlüğü change my name once it has the translation?
No. The registry changes a name only on a Turkish court order. The apostilled and translated deed poll supports that court application and explains the mismatch on your UK documents in the meantime.
I changed my name back to my maiden name after divorce. Which document do I send?
If you reverted by deed poll, send that. If you simply resumed the maiden name on the strength of the decree absolute, the decree absolute or final order is the document Turkish offices will want; see final order translation.
Does the consulate accept your translation for the birth registration file?
The consulate's note asks for the apostilled deed poll and, where it wants a translation, for one from a translator on its own register. Our translation notarised in Ankara is for offices inside Türkiye. Ask the consulate whether it needs a translation at all before ordering.
Do you need the original deed?
No. A clear scan of the certified and apostilled deed is enough for the Ankara notary. Keep the original to show alongside the translation.
